The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: “When a bondsman washes his face, every sin he contemplated with his eyes will be washed away from his face along with the water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin they wrought will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards his feet have walked will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop, with the result that he comes out pure from all sins.” (Muslim)

1. How does purifying our body reflect our soul’s purification?
The power of the Islamic way of life is in its understanding of the inextricable link between body and soul, worldly experience and spiritual experience, life in this world and life in the Hereafter. The nature of one inspires and reflects the other. Thus by purifying our body we inspire and reflect our soul’s purification.

Hadith 2:
The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: “The word of wisdom is the lost property of the believer, so whenever he finds it he has a better right to it.” (Tirmidhi)

1. 'Acquiring knowledge is obligatory on Muslims'. Explain.
It is a right and duty of a Muslim to seek knowledge. The Messenger of Allah gave glad tidings to anyone who undertakes the task of seeking knowledge. Abu Hurayrah relates that the Prophet said, "For him who embarks on the path of seeking knowledge, Allah will ease for him the way to Paradise." (Muslim). When a servant of Allah is granted knowledge, he appreciates Allah's creation more, and becomes more familiar with Allah's attributes and qualities. As a result, he sincerely witnesses that his Creator is the only one worthy of worship, and then submits to Him humbly.

2. Why is it important for us to gain knowledge about our surroundings?
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "times new roman", "new york", times, serif;">We ought to know about our surroundings, our environment. The more we know about Allah’s creation the more we know about Him. If we try to know about Allah, the relationship with Him becomes stronger. Therefore, it is important for us to gain knowledge about our surroundings.<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "times new roman", "new york", times, serif; font-size: 13px;">

Hadith 3:
Abu Hurayrah reported that a person came to Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) and said: “Who among the people is the most deserving of a fine treatment from me?”
He said: “Your mother.”
He again asked: “Then who (next)?”
He said: “Again it is your mother.”
He said: “Then who?”
He said: “Again it is your mother.”
He said: “Then who?”
Thereupon he said: “Then it is your father.” (Muslim)

1. Why have mothers been given more importance than fathers?
It is a mother who surrenders her own body to exhaustion and pain so it could serve as a vessel for carrying our soul into this world. Such an act deserves great importance. Even after the delivery of the baby, a mother’s responsibilities continue. She feeds them and takes care of them by sacrificing her comforts in the day and her sleep in the night without any greed or compulsion but only out of sheer love and affection. This is why from the most important obligations upon a person is to show gratitude to the mother, and kindness and good companionship with her. And in this matter, she is to be given precedence over the father.

2. Mention an ayah and a hadith related to obedience towards parents.
Allah says: “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them (so much as) "Ugh" (Uff), nor shout at them, and speak to them a generous word". [Quran 17: 23]
The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), placed kindness and respect towards parents next to prayers:
'Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ood (May Allah be pleased with him) said: “I asked the Prophet (Peace be upon him), “Which deed is most liked by Allaah?” He said: ‘Prayer offered on time.’ I asked him: ‘Then what? He said, “Kindness and respect towards parents…” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Hadith 4:
The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him): “O women of the Faithful, do not think it is a little thing which you give to your neighbor even if it is a small part of the leg of a goat.” (Abu Dawud included the addition: ‘Give gifts to each other for surely gifts take away ill-feeling from the hearts.”) (Bukhari)

1. How does giving gifts ‘take away ill-feeling from the hearts.’?
Each individual is responsible for the welfare of others in the community and the community is responsible for him. The smallest gift is a reminder of this, fostering goodness in the soul of the giver and encouraging others to also act righteously.

2. Discuss the importance of generosity among human beings.
A single act of generosity is like a pebble thrown into a pond that creates widening ripples of goodness for us and others. It establishes the spirit of mutual support and co-operation which is essential to Islamic society. It brings people closer to each other by removing greed and jealousy.

Hadith 5:
One day the Prophet (Peace be upon him) was going to Prayer and he saw the people buying and selling. He called to the merchants and traders, so they looked up. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) told them, “Traders will be resurrected on the Day of Judgement as sinners except those who are honest and righteous.” And the Prophet continued: “The honest businessman will be resurrected on the Day of Judgement among the Prophets, with the most truthful and the martyrs.” (Tirmidhi)

1. Mention some advantages of honesty and disadvantages of dishonesty.
When a person is honest, he does not need to give evidence to others for his truthfulness. Such a person is immediately trusted.
Honesty in trading is an act so pleasing to Allah that those who practice will be among the ranks of Allah’s most beloved.
Dishonest person is eventually classified as a liar. No one trusts a single word of a dishonest person.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "times new roman", "new york", times, serif;">A dishonest person does not gain success in this world nor in the Hereafter.

2. According to the hadith with whom the honest traders will be resurrected with?
The honest traders will be resurrected with the Prophets, the most truthful and the martyrs.

Hadith 6:
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) said he heard Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) say: “Swearing produces a ready sale for commodity, but blots out the blessing.” (Muslim)

1. Why is swearing not encouraged is Islam?
Whether the oath is true or not, it degrades the Name of Allah. Swearing very often is a mark of a liar.

2. When is it not necessary to swear by Allah’s name?
To prove that one is being honest or that goods are worth their price. Traders can prove their honesty through their own deeds and history of their dealings.

Hadith 7:
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have heard the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) as saying: "It is better for one among you to bring a load of firewood on his back, and give charity out of it (and satisfy his own need), and be independent of people, than that he should beg from people whether they give him anything or refuse him. Truly the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin (charity) with your dependants." (Muslim)

1. Where does charity start?
Charity begins at home, by providing the essentials for sustaining one's own family life.

2. ‘Begging leads to laziness.’ Explain the statement.
When one begs, one is dependent upon others for their livelihood. This eventually causes one to be too lazy to work and stand on one’s own feet, because of being used to that dependence.

3. Is it right to hold certain jobs in contempt?
No, it is not. The dignity of earning one’s own living, however, meager, is to be sought after. Even the poorest gain leads to higher self esteem and heavenly reward if they honestly earn their own income, no matter what their profession is.Islamic Studieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10194054833321524288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781789165206496881.post-54523436664987522992010-10-29T12:54:00.000+04:002010-10-29T12:54:30.229+04:00Allah is the Sustainer of the worlds1. What did the owner of the garden tell his poor friend one day?
The owner of the two gardens told his poor friend that he has more wealth than him and that he is stronger than him in every way.

2. What reply did he give?
The poor man replied that it was wrong that he (the owner) was trying to compete with Allah and it might be that Allah will destroy his property which he is so proud of. He also told his friend that Allah will give him (the poor man) something better than these gardens.

3. Why did Allah send punishment down upon the man?
He was proud of his wealth and he had hurt his friend by calling him weak and poor. So Allah sent punishment upon him.

4. The Quran is not a book of stories. It is a Book of Guidance. What lesson does the Holy Book want to teach through the incident of the two men?
We should always be thankful to Allah for our wealth and all His blessings. We should help the poor and needy. We should not be proud of what we own and should never boast about it to others.Islamic Studieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10194054833321524288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781789165206496881.post-78203082360201178652010-09-27T21:00:00.005+04:002010-10-09T15:12:02.216+04:00Surah Al Qariah

Surah Al Qariah

(The Sudden Striker)

Who was Fatimah Az-Zahra What was her mother’s name? When was she born?
Fatimah Az Zahra was the youngest of the four daughters of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Her mother’s name was Khadijah. She was born about five years before the prophethood of Allah’s Messenger.

2. Describe Fatimah’s marriage with Ali.
Fatimah was married to Ali in 2 H. A ram was sacrificed, a wedding feast was arranged, and the house was readied for the bridal couple. Soft sand was brought from the sea-bed and was scattered it over the earthen floor. Dates and figs were laid out for the guests to eat in addition to the main meal, and a water-skin was filled with water they had perfurmed. This wedding feast was the finest held in Madinah at that time.

3. Fatimah’s life after her marriage was rigorous. Discuss.
Fatimah’s life after her marriage was rigorous as she had no one in the house to help her. Ali, her husband, earned some money as a drawer and carrier of water, and she as a grinder of corn.

4. What did Allah’s Messenger do when Fatimah asked him to give her a servant?
Allah’s Messenger said, 'When you go to bed you say: Allahu Akbar thirty four times, Subhanallah thirty-three times, and Alhamdulillah thirty-three times; this is better for you than a servant.'

5. How many children did she have?
She had five children, three sons, Hasan, Husayn and Muhsin; and two daughters, Zaynab and Umm Kulthum.

6. When did Fatimah die?
Fatimah died on 3rd Ramadan in 11 H.

7. What had she willed before her death?
Before her death, Fatimah willed that her body be carried for burial in such a way that no one could recognise whether it was the body of a man or woman.

8. Write a character sketch of Fatimah.
Fatimah resembled her father closely in habits, traits and in manner of conversation. She was kind and polite. She was a brave and a courageous lady. As there was no one to help her at home, she used to the rigorous household work by herself.

9. Modern Muslim women have indeed an example to copy in Fatimah. Do you agree with this view?
Not only do I agree with this view but also firmly believe that much of the problems in Muslim families will be solved if Fatimah's inimitable character is imbibed by the modern day Muslim women.

10. Who were the four great women of the world according to the Prophet?
The four great women of the world according to the Prophet were Khadijah, Fatimah, Maryam bint Imran and Asi’yah (wife of Pharoah).

11. What did the Prophet once say once about Hasan and Husayn?
The Prophet said, ‘Dearest unto me of the people of my house are Hasan and Husayn’.Islamic Studieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10194054833321524288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781789165206496881.post-45478511017194238382010-05-08T22:32:00.001+04:002010-09-18T10:05:23.442+04:00ISLAM AND THE WORLD1. How did the Hadith of Allah’s Messenger encourage learning?
The Hadith that ‘there is no disease for which Allah has not sent a cure’ gave Muslims an interest in the study of medical sciences. It motivated them to ponder over the teachings of Qur’an and come up with new discoveries in different branches of science.

2. In what fields of science were the Muslims particularly advanced?
The Muslims were particularly advanced in the field of mathematics and medical science.

3. Give a brief account of the hospitals in some of the old Muslim cities.
There were efficient hospitals in each Muslim city. The best hospitals had separate wards for fevers, surgical cases, and eye diseases. The most notable hospital was the Mansuri Hospital in Egypt, built in 1282 A.D. It had beds for several thousand people. It had separate sections for male and female patients.

4. What contribution did the Muslims make to medical science?
Muslims preserved the old scientific works and added their own special knowledge. They performed surgery and did amputations when necessary. They removed cancerous tissues. They created anesthetics that were used in surgical operations. They wrote hundreds of valuable medical books thus contributing towards the advancement of medical sciences.

5. How did each of the following contribute to medicine and learning:

a. Ar-Razi:
Ar-Razi, a great Muslim physician, wrote a medical encyclopedia in which he discussed measles, smallpox, kidney stones, skin diseases, and ways to maintain one’s health. He was the first scientist to differentiate between measles and small-pox. Ar-Razi wrote 200 medical books, which were translated into Latin and were widely consulted in medieval Europe.

b. Ibn Sina:
Ibn Sina explained to the world the human digestive system. He excelled in bacteriology, the basis of modern medical science. He proved that bacteria causes several diseases. He was an expert in anatomy and pharmaceutical sciences. His works were translated into Latin and Greek. His greatest contribution was the magnum opus, the Canonical Law of Medicine, a medical encyclopedia of immense interest.

c. Ibn Abi Hazm:
Ibn Abi Hazm was the first scientist to explain the theory of the circulation of blood in detail. He proved that food is fuel to maintain the heat of the body. He was a physician and a surgeon as well.

6. What Muslim achievements were passed on to the Western civilization?
Muslims in Turkey treated smallpox through vaccination in 1679. The system reached Europe in the 18th century through lady Montague, wife of the British ambassador in Turkey. Sir William Harvey was greatly benefited from the work of a Muslim scientist, Ibn Abi Hazm of Damascus, in propagating the theory of the circulation of blood. The Western civilization was greatly benefited from the encyclopedic works of Ar-Razi and Ibn Sina.Islamic Studieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10194054833321524288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781789165206496881.post-75871181913229452052010-05-03T18:30:00.001+04:002010-09-18T10:05:43.909+04:00ISLAM AND THE WORLD1. What did the Arabs contribute to the field of mathematics?
The figures 1 to 9 were given to the world by the Arabs, who copied them from India. They not only learnt it but also added 0 for zero to it.

2. Do you think the new figures passed on to the world by the Muslims made computing easier? Why?
Yes, the new figures passed on to the world by the Muslims made computing easier because earlier people used to write the numbers in the Roman script, which was quite difficult. For example: MMDLXXV could now be easily written as 2575.

3. What is the Muslim contribution to the field of medicine?
Muslim doctors discovered medicines for treating many diseases. They established finest hospitals. They worked out better ways to sew up the wounds. They wrote several books on medicine.

4. What urged the Muslims to think deeply about various illnesses and discover useful medicines? The Prophet’s saying that ‘there is no disease without a cure’ urged the Muslim doctors to think deeply about various illnesses and discover useful medicines.

5. How did the Muslim doctors discover that smallpox and the measles were two different diseases?
By observation, they learnt that smallpox and the measles were two different diseases.

6. Where was the ‘House of Wisdom’ built? Who built it?
The House of Wisdom was built in Baghdad by its ruler in 830 A.D.

7. What is calligraphy? What did the Muslims think of it?
The art of beautiful Arabic handwriting is called calligraphy. Muslims developed it as an art.

Describe the role of marriage as the basis of Islamic society.
The institution of marriage plays an important role in Muslim society. Allah has caused love and mercy to flow from it in order to establish in the home an atmosphere of tenderness and affection. Marriage is the basis to remain within the limits set forth by Allah. It establishes a moral society devoid of illicit relationships. One of the main objectives of marriage is to found a family which will contribute to the strength of Islam and community.

2. What is the responsibility of believing parents towards their children?
* To raise children according to the Islamic principles and beliefs.
* To provide them best education and moral training.

3. How should children be brought up and trained in a Muslim family?
Children are a trust from Allah. Parents must instil love of religion and fear of Allah in the minds and hearts of their children. There are various ways how a Muslim parent can bring up and train children, some of which are as follows:
1- Showing the values of good deeds and their effects on the individuals and society; also showing the effects of bad deeds, all within the child's capability of understanding.
2- Parents should be a good example in their behavior because children like to imitate their parents in their sayings and their deeds.
3- Teaching the child the religious principles and tutoring him in worship, taking into account the child's capability of understanding. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said: “Order your children to pray at the age of seven.”
4- Treating children nicely and kindly.
5- One of the important things that parents must teach their children is to choose the good company and to the avoid the bad ones, because children are always influenced by the company they keep. The bad behavior can be easily transmitted through bad company.
6- Encouraging the child's sense of belonging to the Muslim Ummah, by teaching him of the brotherhood between Muslims, teaching him to care for Muslims in any land, and that he is part of the Muslim body, to feel joy when Muslims are joyous, to feel sad for Muslims' sadness.
7. Taking children to the masjid.
8. Teaching them the history of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his companions and the history of Islam, bearing in mind the child's capability of understanding.

5. What criterion does the Hadith, mentioned in this lesson, set for a believer in the choice of spouse? What is the wisdom in it?
Religion and piety must be the criterion while choosing one’s life partner. Piety will lead the couple to obey the commands of Allah and fulfil their rights and obligations. Consequently peace and security will prevail in the family.

6. What does the expression ‘may your hand be smeared with dust’ mean?
The Arabs use this expression to encourage someone to do the desired action.

7. Marriage to an idolater or an idolatress is forbidden in Islam. Explain.
Marriage means living under one roof in harmony, love and peace. This will happen only when one’s spouse is of one’s belief system. Marrying someone with conflicting beliefs not only brings about disaster in the family but also defeats the very purpose of marriage.

8. What are the prohibited degrees of marriage?

9. Seeing the woman to whom one proposes marriage is permissible in Islam. Explain.
In order to avoid future regrets, a Muslim boy is allowed to see the girl to whom one proposes marriage. Here seeing also means knowing about her religious nature. The same is true for a Muslim girl.

10. What are the benefits of marriage? What part may a religious faith play in building a happy marriage?

Religious faith and righteousness keeps the family well knitted with peace and harmony prevailing at home.
What is the best thing in the sight of Allah?
Salah offered in its proper time is the best thing in the sight of Allah.

2. What does ‘Dua’ mean?
Dua means calling on Allah. It is to seek help from Allah at all times.

3. What does Allah say in the Qur’an about Dua? Give its meaning in your own words.
In the Qur’an, Allah Himself has told us to turn to Him in Dua for help. Allah is closer to man, He listens and answers the call of His servants. So the servants must keep calling on Allah at all times.

4. What does a Hadith say about Dua?
The Hadith about Dua says that when a man remembers Allah, He is with him. The point is that man must take the initiative to remember Allah. And Allah is always there to help him.

5. Should we despair and give up saying Dua, if an answer to our call does not seem to be coming? Why?
No, we shouldn’t get despaired of the mercy of Allah. We must keep calling on Allah even though the answer doesn’t seems to be coming because no Dua is lost or wasted. Allah knows when to give!
Who was Isa?
Prophet Isa was the last prominent Prophet sent to Bani Isra’il.

2. What was the most extra-ordinary thing about Isa?
The most extra-ordinary thing about Isa was that he was born without a father.

3. Mention some of the virtues of Maryam, the Mother of Isa.
Maryam descended from the family of Harun, the brother of Prophet Musa. There is a chapter entitled Maryam, in the Qur’an. She was a virtuous woman who gave birth to a son, Prophet Isa, by a special miracle from Allah. According to one hadith, Maryam is one among the four great women of the world.

4. What was the mission of Isa?
The mission of Isa is mentioned in the Qur’an in two ways:
1. He was a sign to men; his wonderful birth and wonderful life were to turn a sinful world back to Allah
2. His mission was to give comfort and solace to the repentant.

5. What book was revealed to Isa?
Injeel was the book that was revealed to Prophet Isa.

6. What miracles were given to Isa?
a. He could make birds out of clay, could breathe life into them by Allah’s leave
b. He could heal leprosy
c. He could restore eyesight to the blind.
d. He could make the dead alive.

7. Was Prophet Isa crucified to death? What does the Qur’an say about it?
No, the Prophet Isa was not crucified to death. The Qur’an says that ‘he was raised up to heaven’.

8. What was the teaching of Isa? Did he ask his followers to worship him?
Like other Prophets of Allah, Isa called people to the worship of the One True God. He enjoined upon the people to offer prayers and pay the Zakah. He never told his followers to worship him.

9. What does Islam say about incarnation?
Incarnation means coming of God on earth in human form. Islam rejects this Christian doctrine. Islam says that Isa was merely a created being like all other creatures. He was a Prophet of Allah, and not a son of God! His birth was a sign of the power of Allah.Islamic Studieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10194054833321524288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781789165206496881.post-47267625752520542512010-04-28T20:11:00.003+04:002010-09-18T10:10:24.105+04:00Surah Quraysh
1. 4. Answer the following questions:

1. Who were the Quraysh?
Quraysh was the famous tribe of Makkah. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) belonged to this tribe.

2. What do you mean by ‘winter and summer journeys’?
Allah refers to the trade journeys of the Quraysh.. In summer the Quraysh travelled northward to Syria and Palestine, for they were cool lands, and in winter southward to Yemen etc. for they were warm.

3. What is meant by ‘this house’?
‘This house” refers to the Ka’bah, the House of Allah, in Makkah.

4. Who should worship whom and Why?
The Quraysh should Allah Who is the Sustainer of the Sacred House (Ka’bah) because it is He who provides them with safety and security when they undertake journeys in summer and winter.

5. “Who has fed them against hunger and made them safe from fear”. Explain.
It is Allah Who feeds the people of Quraysh when they feel hungry and it is He who provides peace and security against all forms of fear. So the Quraysh should worship none but Allah.
Islamic Studieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10194054833321524288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781789165206496881.post-30447671714491075792010-04-28T19:03:00.001+04:002010-09-18T10:11:01.324+04:00SADAQAH AND ZAKAH1. What did the righteous man usually do at the time of the harvest?
At the time of the harvest, he used to give fruits to the poor and the needy quite generously.

2. What change occurred when the fruit-garden passed into the hands of his sons?
Unlike their father, the sons were greedy and thought that it was foolish to give away in alms a huge measure of fruits to the poor and the needy.

3. When the time for the harvest arrived, they made a secret plan. What secret plan did they make? Why?
They decided to pluck all the fruits in the small hours of the night, before the poor could arrive to ask for their share. The reason for this plan was that they wanted to tell the poor that they did not had any harvest that season.

4. Why did Allah send down punishment upon them?
Allah sent down punishment upon them because they wanted to deprive the poor of their share.

5. What was its effect upon them?
They realized their mistake and sought forgiveness from Allah.

6. The Qur’an is not a book of stories. It is a Book of Guidance. What lesson does the Holy Book want to teach us through the incident of these two men?
The moral of this incident is that all the favours we enjoy in this world are from Allah. Allah has made this world for us, but nothing belongs to us. Allah has placed all of us ‘in charge’ of it.

7. What is the difference between Sadaqah and Zakah?
Sadaqah is optional but Zakah is obligatory. Sadaqah is to be given by every Muslim while Zakah is compulsory on the rich. Zakah is one of the five Pillars of Islam while Sadaqah is not. Zakah is to be given once in every year and Sadaqah can be given as many times.

8. Does it cost to be kind and helpful? Mention various ways in which we can help one another.
No, it costs nothing to be kind and helpful. Giving some money to the poor, providing water to the thirsty, visiting the sick person, feeding the hungry are some of the ways in which we can help one another.

9. What is Zakah? What does Zakah purify?
Zakah means ‘purifying dues’. It is one of the five pillars of Islam. Paying of Zakah purifies the wealth. It removes greed and purifies the heart of the person who pays the Zakah.

10. Is it binding on every Muslim to pay the Zakah?
No, it is not binding on every Muslim to pay the Zakah.

11. What part of wealth is a rich Muslim required to pay in Zakah?
The amount that a rich Muslim is required to pay in Zakah is 2.5 per cent of his possessions after he has paid or set a sum of money aside for all this necessary debts and obligations.

12. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the most generous of all. Discuss.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never denied anyone anything. At the beginning of his illness, before his death, the Prophet (peace be upon him) had in his house seven dinars; he feared he might die while some money still lay with him. He, therefore, commanded his relatives to give away that money to the poor. This incident speaks a lot about the generous nature of the Prophet (peace be upon him).Islamic Studieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10194054833321524288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7781789165206496881.post-53536060406370039132010-04-22T20:21:00.001+04:002010-09-18T10:11:46.476+04:00FROM SURAH ABASA (Verses 1 - 16)NOTE: You must learn the verses 1 to 16 by heart and know its meaning thoroughly
